World No.1 Novak Djokovic has begun his Serbia Open 2021 campaign with a flawless victory over Kwon Soon-woo on centre court. And he has set up a Serbians clash at the quarterfinal. After the opening round match, the 18-time Grand Slam champion said he was delighted to compete again on his home soil.
Last week, Serb exited early from the Monte Carlo Open 2021 after an expected third-round loss against British Dan Evans. But this week, he crushed the South Korean in straight sets(6-1, 6-3) as a home favourite in Belgrade.
“I thought I played very well from the very beginning, except that service game that I lost at 5-2 in the second (set). I thought it was a pretty flawless performance. I moved well. And I was mixing up the pace quite well, making him play. I served well in the important moments, (and) overall I just felt great,” Djokovic stated in the post-match interview.
Novak Djokovic Reveals He Gains Some Extra Motivation When Competing In Serbia
Following a decade of hiatus, ATP Tour returned to Serbia with the aid of Novak Djokovic’s family. A clay court 250 category event is now taking place at the Novak Tennis Centre with a few spectators.
The two-time former champion emphasised that he felt comfortable on the court while playing in front of his family and friends.
Djokovic added, “It gives you an extra push, an extra motivation, energy to really give your best and leave it all out on the court. I think also that made me feel comfortable and confident on the court, and I played really well. I’m really pleased with the quality of tennis.”
Being a favourite to claim his third title in his backyard, No.1 seed Novak Djokovic will now face compatriot and No.8 seed Miomir Kecmanovic for a semifinal spot.
