Reilly Opelka, one of the tallest men on the ATP Tour, reached his first-ever ATP Masters 1000 Final at the Canadian Open 2021. At the mouth-watering semifinal clash, the unseeded American sent No.3 seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas packing in the three sets 6-7(2), 7-6(4), 6-4.
Opelka and his compatriot John Isner are best known for their height and services in the men’s game. They can often serve nearly 140 miles per hour.
“I played great. These courts suit my game. It is no coincidence that John Isner is in the other semi-final. I think we are the two best servers in the tournament, so for us both to be there. It says something about the conditions. It is live,” Reilly Opelka said in his on-court interview.
After a two-hour and 34-minute gruelling encounter, American claimed the first victory against Greek contemporary in the second meeting. At the same time, Opelka did not forget to shower praise on his opponent, none other than Tsitsipas.
“Stefanos has definitely improved his returning. Come 5-5 in the first set, a lot of balls started to come back. He is a thinker and has a high tennis IQ, so it was expected, but that is what separates him from the rest of the pack,” World No.32 added.
“Will Be A Similar Match To This One”: Reilly Opelka on Toronto 2021 Final
At the Toronto championship match, Opelka will lock horns with Top-seeded Daniil Medvedev. Even though Russian leads American 3-1 in the head-to-head, every match went to a decider.
Opelka expressed before the conclusion of the Daniil Medvedev and John Isner match, “Both Medvedev and Isner are big servers. It is going to come down to a couple of points, I think. It will be a similar match to this one.”
Moreover, Reilly Opelka dismissed No.3 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, No.10 seed Roberto Bautista Agut, Lloyd Harris, No.14 seed Grigor Dimitrov, and Nick Kyrgios to reach his first Masters 1000 Final.
