Former World No.1 Rafael Nadal named 2021 Laureus Sportsman of the year. Spaniard claimed this prestigious award for the second time in his career while he was nominated six-time in 2009, 2011, 2014, 2018, 2020 and 2021.
After a decade of hiatus, Nadal held this award for his achievements at the Roland Garros, where he claimed his 13th title and equalled Roger Federer in the Grand Slam records the last year.
On the occasion of the appreciation, the 20-time Grand Slam champion received congratulations from Lionel Messi, the Argentina National football team and Spanish football club Barcelona captain.
“Hi, Rafa, I just wanted to congratulate you on this award which is obviously more than deserved. I would also like to say that you are an example to everyone because of your hard work, your perseverance and for being at the highest level for so many years, and I wanted to send you warm regards. See you!” Argentina football legend said.
“Unforgettable Moment”: Rafael Nadal on Equaling Roger Federer’s Grand Slam Tally
Rafael Nadal, Joshua Cheptegei, Armand Duplantis, Lewis Hamilton, LeBron James, and Robert Lewandowski were this year’s Laureus Sportsman of the year award nominees.
“I want to say thank you very much from the bottom of my heart to the Laureus Academy. I have had some amazing competitors,” Nadal commented after holding the 2021 Laureus Sportsman of the year award in his hand.
“The rest of the sportsmen probably deserve the trophy the same as me, but this was the year for me, and I can’t be happier,” Rafa added.
Last year, Spaniard claimed the French Open title amidst unfavourable conditions and predictions and levelled Swiss Maestro’s Grand Slam record tally of 20 titles.
Spaniard continued, “Winning the French Open and equalling the 20th Grand Slam of Roger Federer has been an unforgettable moment. It means a lot to equal my great rival, but at the same time, my great friend. It’s something very special after all the history we have had together on and off the court.”
