Toni Nadal, the former coach and uncle of Rafael Nadal, returned to the ATP Tour for the first time since February 2017. Here and now, the 60-year-old Spaniard has not come out for coaching his nephew despite teaching tennis lessons for the Canadian rising star Felix Auger-Aliassime.
In a recent Zoom conversation, Felix Auger-Aliassime announced his team up with veteran tennis coach none other than Toni Nadal. In addition to this, He will be joining Rafael Nadal’s former coach before the beginning of the Monte-Carlos Masters 2021, which starts on 11th April.
Why Did Toni Nadal Decide To Coach Felix Auger-Aliassime
At the end of last year, Canadian went to Monacar to practise at Rafael Nadal’s tennis academy. During the training sessions, Felix Auger-Aliassime took many tennis tips from the academy director and Rafael Nadal’s uncle Toni.
“I’d already had a chat with him quite a while ago, and he left a good impression on me. Also, through my nephew, everyone has always had nice things to say about him,” Toni Nadal said in a recent interview with a men’s professional tennis website.
A famous coach continued, “When the idea of working together was put to me, I told him to come to the Academy in 10 days so that we could get to know each other and to see whether what I had to say to him would be of use.”
“I Have A Special Affection For My Nephew(Rafa)”: Toni
One of the most successful tennis coaches in the history book emphasised what will happen when Felix Auger-Aliassime has to lock horns with his nephew Rafael Nadal.
“I’m Rafael Nadal’s uncle and director of his Academy. But, above all, I have a special affection for my nephew. If he has to lose to someone, then let it be Felix. Forgetting that I’m his uncle, I’ve been linked to him for many years, and the day they eventually play, I won’t be in either box out of respect to them both.” Toni added.
Spaniard also expressed he is excited about working with Felix. “Hopefully, in the future, he can be World No. 1. I’m in no doubt. At the moment, he has to improve, and I am still Rafael’s uncle,” Uncle Nadal confessed.
Notably, Rafael Nadal will also resume his tour at the Rolex Monte-Carlos Masters as a third seed contestant.
