Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas reached a second consecutive Grand Slam semifinal at the Australian Open 2021 on Wednesday. The 2019 ATP Finals champion also became the second player to defeat Rafael Nadal after losing the first two sets.
Notably, Fabio Fognini is the first player to defeat Spaniard after the first two sets down at major events. The 33-years-old Italian overcame Nadal 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 during the 2015 US Open.
“I Started Very Nervously”, says Stefanos Tsitsipas
However, now in the four-hour epic quarterfinal contest, No.5 seed Tsitsipas stunned the 20-time Grand Slam champion after winning three sets in the straight line 3-6, 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-4, 7-5.
“I have no words to describe what has just happened on the court, my tennis speaks for itself,” Tsitsipas said in an on-court interview.
The 22-years-old man from Athens continued, “It’s an unbelievable feeling to fight at such a high level and leave it out on the court. I started very nervously. I don’t know what happened after the third set. I flew like a bird, and everything worked for me.”
“I am Really Happy With The Attitude That I Showed On The Court”: Tsitsipas
Stefanos now defeated the 13-time Roland Garros champion for the second time in the eight meetings, but Rafael Nadal still leads the 2020 French Open semifinalist 6-2 in their head to head series.
“I focused on staying calm and holding my nerves today. I have failed to do so in some of my matches (in the past). I stayed calm in the tight moments, and I kept everything to myself. I am really happy with the attitude that I showed on the court,” Tsitsipas added.
