In recent days, the former Rafael Nadal’s coach Toni Nadal and the Canadian rising star Felix Auger-Aliassime’s team-up is top news in the tennis columns. Amid the discussions over Toni and Felix partnership, nephew Rafael Nadal, World No.1 Novak Djokovic, and rival Stefanos Tsitsipas have shared their perspectives.
The 20-year-old from Montreal has been snowballing since he turned as a professional in 2017. In the ATP ranking, he is standing on 21st perch. Felix has played in the championship matches for seven-time so far, but he did not claim his maiden ATP tour-level singles title.
Rafael Nadal Doesn’t Have Any Problem With Toni and Felix Collaboration
Following the Australian Open’s quarterfinal exits, Rafael Nadal competes at the Monte Carlo Masters 2021. In an interview ahead of Monaco’s ATP Masters 1000 event, Nadal was asked about his uncle Toni Nadal’s return. The 20-time Grand Slam champion said he was delighted.
Rafael Nadal continued, “Toni has a lot of experience. He knows a lot about this sport. He has all the knowledge that somebody needs. I am sure that [is] going to be an important help for Felix.”
“I don’t have any problem. And I always said the same: I want the best for Toni. He’s my uncle. I am very grateful for all the things that he did for me. I am happy that he’s on the Tour for a couple of weeks,” Junior Nadal added.
Nadal also said that he is happy for Felix Auger-Aliassime because it will be good support for Felix to have a great coach like his uncle Toni Nadal.
Novak Djokovic Is Not Surprised By Felix Made Partnership With Toni Nadal
In the last couple of years, Felix often trained under Toni Nadal’s supervision at the Rafa Nadal tennis academy in Monacor. According to Serb, Felix Auger-Aliassime has all the qualities to team up with Toni Nadal.
“I know Felix had spent quite a bit of time in the past couple years at Rafa’s academy training and getting advice and mentorship from Toni when he was there. Toni probably was excited to explore a new project, a new adventure on the Tour with one of the best young tennis players in the world at the moment,” the six-time year-end World No.1 said.
Djokovic further added, “Felix is a great guy. He’s someone that has hard-working ethics, which is very important for Toni. I wish them all the best. It’s nice to see Toni on the Tour. He’s had his mark with Rafa for so many years. I feel like he can only bring positives to Felix’s game and mindset.”
Felix Has An Advantage Having A Coach Like Toni Nadal, says Stefanos Tsitsipas
With uncle Toni’s aid, Rafael Nadal has claimed his 16 Grand Slam and numerous ATP tour titles. Stefanos Tsitsipas believes that Toni Nadal might give good advice to Felix Auger-Aliassime.
“Didn’t see that coming. It’s pretty cool having a coach that has helped Rafael Nadal win so many important titles and has shaped his career in a way. It’s perfect for him,” Tsitsipas said.
“I feel like he has an advantage having a coach like this. But he’s not going to do the playing for him. (Toni) might give him a few tips and good advice. It’s all going to go out on the court at the end,” Greek concluded.
