The 20-time Grand Slam champions Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are known for their rivalry and friendship in the tennis world. But, Spaniard admits he and Swiss Maestro are not close friends in a recent interview.
Having considered one of the greatest rivalries of all-time, Federer and Nadal have battled each other on 40 occasions. They often mutually share greetings for their achievements.
The 34-year-old from Manacor said that he and his rival Federer are pretty good companions, and by the lapse of time, their friendship enhanced.
“We are very good companions, and as time went on, our relationship improved,” Nadal stated when speaking about Federer.
“We Can Call Each Other Anytime And Speak About Anything”: Rafael Nadal
Rafael Nadal leads Roger Federer 24-16 in their head-to-head series. The 13-time Roland Garros title winner further underlined he would not disclose his injury concerns to Swiss before meeting him on the court.
Spaniard continued, “We are not close friends. I would not tell him that my knee hurts before facing him!”
On the other hand, Nadal also mentioned they have mutual respect. And they can talk about random things whenever they wish.
“We can call each other anytime and speak about anything. I spoke with him just today!” Nadal added.
However, Nadal fell in the semifinal to Roger Federer in the 2019 Wimbledon at the last meeting. After 13 months of hiatus, the 39-year-old from Basel returned to the circuit earlier this month at Qatar Open 2021.
According to recent reports, Nadal has begun preparation on the gravel surface ahead of the European swing. Notably, both of them skipped the ongoing Miami Open in Florida. Hopefully, Rafa and RF will appear on tour sooner and continue their rivalry to entertain us.
