The former tennis star Evonne Goolagong Cawley is the only mother who not just played but won the ladies’ singles title. She said that any tennis mom or Serena Williams winning the upcoming All England Club tournament will make her happy.
The Australian player Cawley who defeated Chris Evert from America to win the 1980 Wimbledon singles title shared her feelings, “When I came off court, I was told I was the first mother to win the singles title for 66 years. It’s now been 40 years since I won.
Only two other mothers viz., Margaret Court and Kim Clijsters have won Grand Slams in the Open Era. It’s just not that easy after children.” The proud winner of 7 Grand Slam singles titles sounded quite thrilled for either Serena Williams or any other tennis player who is a mother as well to win the singles at Wimbledon next year.
“I Would Love It To Happen”-Evonne Goolagong Cawley
The Current list of mothers playing the ambitious racket game includes talented players from across the continents like Serena Williams, Kim Clijsters, Victoria Azarenka, Sania Mirza, Tatjana Maria, Mandy Minella, Kateryna Bondarenko, etc.
“I would love it to happen. It would make mums everywhere, including this one, feel great. It is great to see so many mothers competing at a high level on the tour these days.” She remarks enthusiastically.
“It’s now common for women in all fields of life to return to their working roles after having children, including in sport. It’s challenging, even difficult, at the top level but I think it’s great for tennis that we have some more mums out there today” she told.
The iconic player of her times remembers her struggle and opines how difficult and challenging things were for her in the past with the persistent traveling, health, and fitness issues after childbirth and subsequent injuries brought in by practice and matches. Additionally, there was press criticism and public pressure.
However, she feels contented that presently the challenges for women today are not much the same as they were for her. It is quite interesting here to note that Serena Williams has bagged 23 Grand Slam singles titles and earned four Grand Slam finals in singles tournaments despite being a caring mother.
