From Street to US Open: The rise and rise of Sloane Stephens

American tennis player Sloane Stephens celebrated her 27th birthday on Friday. 2017 US Open champion was born in 1993, Florida, United States. Sports parents brought Sloane to earth, who was accomplished in Swimming and Professional American Football.  Stephens began her career at street club matches near Sloan’s house, Fresno, California.

Furthermore, the Grand Slam winner shifted to Florida for an enhancement. At the tennis academy, fortunately, Stephens caught an opportunity to work with Former American tennis player Nick Saviano, who coached Canadian tennis player Eugenie Bouchard.

During the Junior Career, Sloane Stephens ranked No.05 by International Tennis Federation(ITF) and won three Grand Slam doubles titles in 2010 with her pair Timea Babos of Hungary.

At the age of 19, the American turned into a professional career, the first entry was Miami Open 2008 using a wildcard. However, Sloane lost to Ekaterina Bychkova of Russia in the straight sets(1-6, 5-7).    

Sloane Stephens major breakthrough in 2013

In between 2009 to 2012, Stephens participated in various WTA circuit tournaments, even though she did not shine well during those periods. 

The first clash between Sloane to World No.03 Serena Williams in 2013 Brisbane International Quarterfinals. Although Junior lost to Senior in the straight sets nevertheless, Serena appreciated an emerging player like “You will be the best player in the world one day” 

And then, in the same season, Stephens reached semifinals in 2013 Hobart International where she fell to Elena Vesnina of Russia in the straight sets(2-6, 2-6).

2013 Australian Open, the 29th seeded American reached the semifinals. Eventually, Stephens lost to eventual champion Victoria Azarenka of Belarus. Notably, in the second clash, Sloane beat Serena Williams at the last eight round and finished the year at No.12 position in the world.

Almost seven of a year of professional career Sloane Stephens claimed her first WTA singles at the 5th edition of Washington Open in August 2015. In 2016, Stephens won the three more WTA singles title in Auckland, Acapulco and Charleston.

Sloane Stephen’s dream Grand Slam title 

This time, Sloane Stephens entered US Open 2017 through direct acceptance at the same time she needed to work hard for her first Grand Slam in the motherland. Sloane beat the four top 20 players and particularly in semifinals she defeated World No.09 Venus Williams in the three sets. Also, Stephens named WTA Comeback Player of year.

A Career-high ranking and missing of second Grand Slam

In 2018, Stephens won a single title out of four finals. She lifted the trophy at Miami Open albeit Sloane missed her three titles in Roland Garros, Candian Open and WTA Finals. Especially, She lost to Simona Halep of Romania in French Open and Montreal.

In the Women’s Tennis Association Tour Finals Sloane gave up to Elina Svitolina of Ukraine. In addition, the American reached No.03 at WTA ranking table, which is her career highest rank ever.


The last appearance in Monterrey Open 2020, Sloane Stephens lost to Canadian teen Leyleh Annie Fernandez in the second round(7-64, 3-6, 3-6). Although, She is ranking on 37th in the World right now.
