Serena Williams, who we know as the tennis legend, has more to her than just tennis! She is a big fan of F1 racing and follows the sport, and has her favorites. She took to Instagram some time back to congratulate the 35-year-old British racing driver, Lewis Hamilton, on breaking the record for the most podiums in history.
That wasn’t the first time the American has shown her interest in F1 racing. She has attended the F1 events in the past, including the Formula One Mexican Grand Prix in 2016. That’s where the two were seen holding hands as they made their way through the circuit.
Once again, Serena can be seen rooting for Hamilton as he will try and equal a record! He is getting his first chance to match Schumacher’s record of 91 F1 wins at this weekend’s Russian Grand Prix.
“He is, for me, the greatest driver that our generation has seen. I’m confident that he will break the record of Michael Schumacher, who was also a fabulous driver.”, the American said while addressing the media at Roland Garros on the day she turned 39.
“Lewis and I are Super Close”- Serena Williams
She and Hamilton have been super close friends and also mutual supporters of each other’s game. Serena and Venus Williams have been present in the stands watching the races on many occasions.
“Lewis and I are super close. I’ve known him for years. I love that guy. He’s a really good friend of mine. The guy is such a champion, has such a champion’s mindset”, the former no.1 added.
In 2016, Hamilton also talked about how enchanted he was by Serena’s game, her determination, and her inspiring personality. They both also relate to each other more as they share similar backgrounds.
They both grew up with no family background in their sports but with determined fathers pushing them on and have come such a long way.
Junior Williams continued, “I look at what he does training, physically, his job, it’s really no words for it, to be honest. Lewis is so intense. If you know anything, even if you’re a fan, you know he lives his life on his sleeve.
He’s very emotional. He says what he says. That’s just who he is. He doesn’t care who you are. That’s one thing I’ve grown to really appreciate about him, as well.”, the 23-time grand slam champion added.
The 39-year-old has never refrained from supporting her fellow sportspeople and did not this time too. She seems confident of the Briton and believes that he can equal the record.
Not only Hamilton but Serena also will be trying to equal a record in the tennis fraternity. She will aim to win her 24th slam title at the French Open this season to equal Margaret Court’s record.
