The US open 2020 is the first major tennis tournament taking place after the lockdown is facing certain issues. The organizers of the US open have left a couple of the players unhappy owing to confusion in the safety protocols. The match between Adrian Mannarino and Alexander Zverev on Friday had a three-hour delay. However, Djokovic admitted he is not happy with the US Open bubble.
Apparently, they were trying to reach on to a conclusion regarding some issues that took time. The organizers along with former ATP Players’ Council President Novak Djokovic, were trying to find a solution.
According to Mannarino, the State department of health took over the city and the decision was now in their hands. He originally had the permission to play by the rules of the city, but the state department was not allowing it.
The reason being that he was one of the players who came in contact with Benoit Paire and hence had to follow strict quarantine. The French professional did get to play at the end but after a lot of tension.
The World No.01 Novak Djokovic said he tried to help the situation as much as he could and help the 32-year-old out.
“I was communicating with his coach for a few hours and trying to help, speaking to the ATP. I was also trying to get to the people that are in the highest positions in New York state. Trying to get to the governor of New York. Because I understood he was the only one who could revert the decision.” he said.
He also made it clear that this decision was not in the hands of either ATP or the USTA.
“In the end, I don’t know what happened apart from he could play which I was pleased to see. Unfortunately, it’s not in many cases up to ATP and USTA to make these decisions and make these calls.” Djokovic explained.
“There are quite a lot of false-positive tests in the sport I’ve been hearing”- Djokovic
Apart from this, Djokovic does not seem to be very happy with how the safety protocols are being followed by the organizers. He slammed the bubble protocol at the event questioning their hotel, more than half of which was open.
“You have the second hotel here where you have weddings happening and half of the hotel or more is open, how is that a bubble? It’s a very complicated issue we’re discussing here. I hope we’ll all learn from this and be stronger, for players specifically.” the Serbian said.
On top of this, the 17-time grand slam champion Djokovic was not very happy with the inconsistency of the rules and how they were managing such situations.
“We knew that coming into the States, there was a high probability situation like this could occur. I’m not happy this kind of circumstance with the French players was managed.”, Djokovic said.
Such situations also forced the 33-year-old Novak Djokovic to question the presence of false-positive tests going around. The professional also brought up the new players’ association and said that it would tackle such issues and prevent them from occurring.
“I’m not happy to see Dellen and Pella were in a very similar situation and had to withdraw from the tournament. Benoit was positive, we don’t even know if it was a false positive. There are quite a lot of false-positive tests in the sport I’ve been hearing.” Novak Djokovic said.
