“It Is a Great Chance For Him to Tie Roger”: Denis Shapovalov on Rafael Nadal’s 20th Grand Slam at French Open 2020

21-year-old Canadian, Denis Shapovalov believes that Rafael Nadal has a golden opportunity to win the French Open title and equal Federer’s record of 20 Grand Slams. Additionally, world number 14 is playing right now in the Italian Open. And is only a win away from entering into the semi-finals of the tournament.

He will be facing the Bulgarian star Grigor Dimitrov in the quarter-final match on the red dirt surface. Additionally, both have played against each other twice, with Dimitrov winning on both the incidents. 

In a post-match conference after winning the second round match, Shapovalov mentioned Rafael Nadal and his records and legacy, especially on the clay surface. The Spanish legend has 12 titles in the French Open, which is a record in itself.

Besides, he will arrive at the tournament as the favorite to win it. In addition to this, the Canadian also believes that Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic will all be considered in the list of the greatest of all time.

He said, “I think it is super interesting as a fan of the sport to see these three guys battling it out for Grand Slam, for weeks of No. 1. It is very exciting for everyone.”

“I think as a legacy stands, no matter who has the most Grand Slams, who has the weeks at No. 1, those three guys are going to be all remembered as the GOATs, as the greatest of all time”, Shapovalov said.

Talking about Nadal’s chances of winning the 20th Grand Slam in the French Open, he said, “I think it is a great chance for him to tie Roger. He has never been in that situation before. And now he has come so close tying to Roger.”

Shapovalov is most likely to meet Nadal if he is able to win the quarterfinal fixture in the semi-final stage. Additionally, Nadal will try to win the Italian Open, what would be his 10th Rome Masters title.
