With a wealth of experience and form, Novak Djokovic entered the Roland Garros final against Rafael Nadal on Sunday. He has defeated the Spaniard in 29 of their previous 55 matches.
However, despite all his (Djokovic) past success against World No. 1 and even his uncompromising performance throughout the tournament, he could not equal Nadal’s standards.
Djokovic was profoundly the favorite player for many analysts to win the match and take the title home. Moreover, many said that the conditions at the French Open suit Novak better than Nadal.
“He’s(Nadal) Phenomenal”: Djokovic
Nadal outshined Novak in the first set itself as the set ending upon receiving 6-0! World number one was surprised, including everyone, as to how Nadal dominated him throughout the match.
“I don’t have much to say but that I was completely outplayed by Rafa, by the better player on the court,” taking his defeat positively Djokovic answered while talking to the reporters.
Nole also explained the power pack performance Nadal gave during the tournament. He added, “He was not missing at all and getting every ball back, just playing tactically great. I felt well throughout the entire tournament. I thought I was in great form.”
“Certainly, I could have played better, especially in the first two sets. But he (Nadal)did surprise me with the way he was playing, the quality of tennis he was producing,” Djokovic continued.
“He’s phenomenal. He played a perfect match, especially in the first two sets,” Serb added.
“[There’s] no holding him back it seems like. It’s amazing. I mean, I admire all his achievements, I mean, especially the one here.” he concluded.
Nadal equaled Roger Federer’s record of 20 Grand Slam titles and became the first man to win 100 matches at Roland Garros.
