Medvedev, however, did not repeat his mistake from last year when he was 5-1 up against Nadal with a match point and could not close the match.

Speaking after the win, the 24-year-old said, To beat Rafa, you need everything: [a] good backhand, good forehand working [that] day. Mentally you need to be super strong because he’s there [for] all the points.”

The Russian who has made his first-ever final entry in the tournament has a 4-0 winning streak. And he looks good to go the distance. He will be up against the might of Dominic Thiem who has been nothing short of brilliant so far.

Both Medvedev and Thiem have defeated the World No.1 Novak Djokovic and World No.2 Rafael Nadal in the tournament. While they are the two players to have achieved this feat, the only third player happens to be Roger Federer, from 10 years ago.

The top four in the FedEx ATP Rankings managed to seal a spot in the season-ending tournament. This has happened for the first time since the year 2004. Thiem and Medvedev share just the one Grand Slam between them(Thiem’s US Open 2020 victory).

Speaking about this shift in tennis from the ‘Big 3’ to the new crop of players and his opponent in the Finals, Medvedev said, “I think it’s super for tennis. We are starting to get to take our marks. Dominic won his first Slam [and he is] playing unbelievable tennis right now.”

“[It’s] not going to be easy. Hopefully, I can play good like this. I for sure can cause him some troubles. Dominic is [an] amazing player. I think it’s going to be great tennis tomorrow,” he added.
