While World No.2 Simona Halep is considered to lift the Melbourne Park major event title this year, a 29-years-old woman from Romania was tested for her talent during a second-round match.
“I Expected Her To Play Really Hard”, Simona Halep on Facing Ajla Tomljanovic
Halep and Ajla were equal in the scoreboard after the second set (4-6, and 6-4). As a result, a crucial match went to a decider. Having a remarkable comeback from 2-5 down in the final set, the experienced Halep took two hours and 34 minutes to steer past(7-5) the 27-years-old Australian Ajla Tomljanovic.
“I expected her to play really hard, I knew she was a powerful opponent, but it was a lot harder than I thought. I’m happy to be able to smile now,” the two-time Grand Slam champion said.
“You were led 2-5 in the decider, what were you thinking in those moments?”, Simona Halep was asked in a post-match interview.
The 2018 Australian Open runner-up replied, “I wasn’t so positive when I talked to myself. I didn’t talk about the score. I blamed myself for not being strong enough to play against her. But in the end, I was stronger mentally, I had the desire to win the match, and not I gave up.”
For a pre-quarterfinal place, Simona Halep will now face Russian Veronika Kudermetova, who defeated her compatriot Varvara Gracheva in her previous match after a set down(5-7, 6-2, 6-2). Will we see who wins the battle?
