Coco Gauff delighted her fans with back-to-back Emilia-Romagna Open 2021 titles last week. This week, an emerging star surprised her fans after teaming up with her idol Venus Williams for the French Open 2021 doubles event.
As usual, the French Open doubles’ main draw was recently released in Paris, but the whole tennis world was surprised after seeing 17-year old Coco Gauff and 40-year-old Venus Williams’s names and compete without their usual partners on the Parisian clay.
Gauff has won three doubles titles so far and typically appeared in the WTA doubles event with her friend and countrywoman, Caty McNally. An American pair most recently hunted doubles crown at the Emilia-Romagna Open 2021 in Parma.
On the other hand, Venus Williams has claimed 22 doubles titles in her career. She won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, including the 1999 and 2010 French Open titles, with her younger sister, none other than Serena Williams. Notably, this will be the first Grand Slam event for Venus that she has not played doubles with Serena.
However, the team-up with the 27-year experienced player will undoubtedly help rising star Gauff learn new tennis lessons. Venus and Gauff will lock horns with 13th-seeded Ellen Perez and Zheng Saisai in the opening round of the Paris major event.
Coco Gauff leads Venus Williams 2-0 in their head-to-head series in the singles event. She upset her fellow player in straight sets at the 2019 Wimbledon and 2020 Australian Open.
