Teenage prodigy Coco Gauff and two-time Grand Slam Champion Garbine Muguruza had exhibited their best skills at the recently concluded Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships 2021. As a result, both of them have now gained momentum in the WTA ranking.
Coco Gauff’s Maiden WTA 1000 Quarter Final
Gauff, who celebrated her 17th birthday on Saturday, made her first WTA 1000 event quarterfinal in the Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships 2021 last week. She went to play two tiebreaker sets to defeat Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova in the opening round.
American was a wild card entrant of the hardcourt tournament, but she upset the 2019 French Open runner-up and No.12 seed Marketa Vondrousova before reaching the round of 16.
After a comfortable victory over another rival from the Czech Republic, Tereza Martincova, Coco Gauff advanced into the last eight. But, she eventually fell to Swiss Jil Teichmann in straight sets before confirming a semifinal spot.
However, Gauff climbed five places to stand on 35th perch in the Women’s Tennis Association rating list with 1821 points.
Garbine Muguruza’s First Title Since April 2019
Former World No.1 Muguruza also claimed her first title of the season at the Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships after losing two finals.
The Spaniard won her last title at the 2019 Monterrey Open. Afterwards, she played finals at the 2020 Australian Open, and this year’s Yarra Valley Classic, and Qatar Total Open. However, she eventually ended her title drought last week in Dubai.
To lift her 8th tour-level title, Garbine Muguruza just dropped a set and stunned three top 20 players( Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka and Elise Mertens) in a row.
Having played back-to-back finals last week, Muguruza jumped three steps to rank 13th globally with 4235 points.
