Coco Gauff and Wang Qiang will lock horns for the Emilia-Romagna Open 2021 title. It will be the first title on clay for the Parma championship match contenders in their career.
Coco Gauff vs Wang Qiang Preview
Gauff has had an outstanding season so far. As a result, she has now reached the first final on the clay surface and will compete for the second title of her career.
Most notably, Coco lifted her first WTA tour-level at the 2019 Linz Open. Before arriving in Parma, she has managed to play the quarterfinal in Charleston and reach the first WTA 1000 semifinal in Rome in the clay-court swing.
At Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, the No.3 seed claimed comfortable straight-sets wins over Estonian Kaia Kanepi, host Camila Giorgi, and fellow American Amanda Anisimova in the first three encounters.
World No.30 needed extra efforts to defeat the Czech Katerina Siniakova in the three sets(7-5, 1-6, 6-2) for reserving the final spot in Parma.
On the other hand, No.6 seed Wang Qiang is also competing for her first title on the red dirt. But she clinched crowns at the Guangzhou Open and Jiangxi Open in 2018.
Former World No.12 began her campaign in Emilia-Romagna Open this week with a win-loss record of 4-11 this season. However, the Chinese’s story is entirely different in Parma, and she now has doubled her winning percentage.
At the Emilia-Romagna Open this week, Wang effortlessly overcame Japanese Misaki Doi and fans favourite Martina Di Giuseppe in the first two rounds.
In particular, Qiang upset No.2 seed Petra Martic in three sets(7-6, 3-6, 7-5) in the quarterfinal. Later on, in the last four, she claimed a fantastic victory(6-2, 7-6) over the 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephen after fighting back from 1-5 down during the second set.
Coco Gauff vs Wang Qiang Head-To-Head
The Emilia-Romagna Open 2021 championship match will be the first-ever meeting between Coco Gauff and Wang Qiang. As a consequence, their head-to-head record is 0-0.
Coco Gauff vs Wang Qiang Prediction
Winning a title on a clay surface would give more confidence for contestants ahead of the upcoming Grand Slam event in Paris. Hence, it will be a nip and tuck encounter for both of them.
But Gauff and Wang have had a completely different season so far. American has entered into the top 30 for the first time in her career, while Chinese has been losing her perch week by week in the WTA ranking table.
However, Wang’s wins against Petra Matric and Sloane Stephens show that she recorrects her mistakes game by game to find her old rhythm. At the same time, the 29-year-old Chinese needs a superwoman power to defeat brave Gauff. Coco has a win-loss record of 11-3 on clay this season.
Gauff’s calmness is the main reason for her recent victories on the WTA Tour, but her double faults raise concerns. The 17-year-old American made 26 double faults in four matches this tournament only.
Match Prediction: Coco Gauff to win in straight sets to lift the Emilia-Romagna Open title in Parma.
