Everyone wants to have a friend or group of friends wherever they go. But, the US Open 2020 Champion Naomi Osaka has two reasons for why she does not have many friends in the locker room, where tennis players have a chance to make a relationship with fellow players.
We know that tennis is an individual and worldwide sport. Players needed someone to express their emotions, whether it’s positive or negative. The concern is that tennis players are closer to their team members than counterparts.
World No.3 was asked about the locker room culture in a recent conversation with the Boardroom. Naomi Osaka replied, “I can only speak for me. I don’t really have that many friends like on tour not on purpose, but I feel like I’m so busy I’m sort of just like in and out of the locker.”
23-years-old continued, “We know other players have friends that are also tennis players, but a part of me also thinks like everyone wants to win the tournament, so there’s this sort of thing if you don’t want to get too close to another player. I could be making this up in my mind.”
“Path Isn’t As Like Clean Cut”: Naomi Osaka on Goal Setting
Within a couple of years, Naomi became one of the best athletes in the world. Osaka has won three Grand Slam titles so far while she has been ranked as a No.1 by the Women’s Tennis Association(WTA).
Speaking about her future goals, three-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka expressed, “I mean, of course, I have a goal. Still, at the same time, I’ve realised that the path isn’t as like clean cut it’s not as perfect as I would like a dream of so I think my focus is the next major or the next tournament that I play it.”
“I think I do better when my goals are short term as opposed to like thinking about wanting to win ten grand slams or whatever I feel like that puts too much pressure on me. So just wherever the wind blows, hopefully, you’ll do well.” Naomi concluded.
