At the crucial stage of Wimbledon 2021, former champion Angelique Kerber and World No.1 Ashleigh Barty will lock horns for the championship match spot on the lawn.
German and Australian are equal(2-2) in their head-to-head series. It will be the first meeting between Kerber and Barty on the grass surface.
While Angie is looking forward to her fourth Grand Slam of her career, Ash is searching for her second major title at the SW 19.
However, No.25 seed Kerber booked her semifinal spot for the fourth time in Wimbledon. In addition, She powered past No.19 seed Karolina Muchova, No.20 seed Coco Gauff, Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Sara Sorribes Tormo, and Nina Stojanovic in the previous rounds.
Talking ahead of the No.1 seed Barty semifinal showdown, Kerber said, “Against Ash, I know that I have to play my best tennis. She has a lot of confidence right now. She played well.”
“I know that I have to play my own game. I have to just think about playing, being aggressive, and trying to take the match more in my hands and go for it. Even if I miss a few shots, I have to stay there and try to push her(Barty),” 2018 Wimbledon champion added.
Kerber Is One of The Best Grass Courter Going Around, says Barty
“Angie obviously has an incredible record here. She’s made multiple finals. She’s one of the best grass courters going around. I think the challenge of playing her in a semifinal of Wimbledon is an incredible opportunity, one that I’m really excited for,” Barty said ahead of the Kerber semi-final encounter.
Australian further continued, “It’s exciting to have the challenge of playing someone who is comfortable on these courts, who knows how to win this tournament.”
In their latest meeting, Ashleigh Barty defeated Angelique Kerber in straight sets(7-5, 6-1) at the 2018 Wuhan Open. But, German claimed a grass-court title at the Bad Homburg Open before arriving in London this year. At the same time, Australian did not compete in any lawn event ahead of Wimbledon 2021.
