Before tennis tour suspension, Simona Halep won 20th WTA singles title at the Dubai Tennis Championships. Romanian outlasted Kazakh Elena Rybakina in the thriller final match, which was later announced 2020’s Match of the Year by Women’s Tennis Association.

The 29-years-old replied that “all the victories were very sweet.” Halep continued, “And the Dubai final, I saw it was the match of the year. It was a pretty tough final, I was a little injured in that match, and Rybakina played the whole tournament incredibly, but I managed to win, and that made me very happy.” (Quotes translated into English via Google translator)

“Rome Was The Sweetest Trophy This Year”, says Simona Halep

After nearly six months of hiatus, the WTA tour returned from Italy’s Palermo Open. Still, Halep resumed in the Czech Republic’s Prague Open, where she claimed her second title.

Afterwards, Simona went to Italy for Rome Open, where she did not manage to win titles at the previous two finals. Yet this time, the former World No.1 was crowned in straight away after a set down.

“The tournament in Rome was the sweetest trophy this year because I really wanted it, I had already made two finals before, and I felt I could win. It happened this year, and it was like the icing on the cake from all the madness this year, because it wasn’t easy for us athletes either.”, Halep concluded.

Two time Grand Slam champion began preparing for 2021 season, while she confirmed her participation at the Australian Open. Notably, the next year WTA Tour will commence on 6th January in Abu Dhabi.
