Amid body fitness concerns, the World No.2 Simona Halep has advanced to the second round of the Australian Open 2021 with a comfortable victory.
A 29-years-old woman from Romania, one of the leading Down Under Major event contestants for the past decade, reached the 2018 Australian Open final and played until semifinal in the last year.
Having first-round losses in the four appearances, on Monday, the second seed locked horns with wildcard entrant Lizette Cabrera in her opening round match this year at Melbourne Park.
The Constanta native pulled out of the host within less than an hour and without losing a set(6-2, 6-1).
“I like to be here, so I like to play Australians”, Simona Halep said in the post-match interview.
“I Feel Good. My Body Is Fit”, says Simona Halep
A lower-back injury hampered the two-time Grand Slam champion during the Australian Open warm-up event last week. As a result, Romanian gave up her singles quarterfinal match in the straight sets and walked over from the doubles quarterfinal match.
However, Simona Halep revealed that she feels good and healthy after an easy win over the 23-years-old Lizette Cabrera, who did not win a single match in the Grand Slam events’ six appearances.
Former World No.1 continued, “I feel good. My body is fit. It’s always difficult to play a big hitter. So I have to be strong on my legs, focus on myself and give my best.”
In the second round of the Australian Open 2021, Simona Halep will meet another local woman none other than World No.69 Ajla Tomljanovic. And while Romanian and Australian faced each other three times so far, Simo leads Ajla in their head-to-head record 3-0.
