Former World No.1 Simona Halep has had a drought season in 2021. Romanian is currently ranked out of the top ten. However, she is “super happy” now after confirming her spot at the second round of US Open 2021.
Halep powered past WTA Montreal 2021 title winner Camila Giorgi in straight sets(6-4, 7-6) in the opening encounter at the last major event of the season.
“I’m super happy that I could win the match. It was really important because I had a long period of being home and no official matches,” the two-time Grand Slam champion said in the post-match press conference.Embed from Getty Images
“I struggled a little bit in the end to finish the match, but I’m happy that actually, I have been strong enough in the end, in the second set, to finish the match.”
No.12 seed will face Slovak Kristina Kucova in the second round of her second Grand Slam event of the year.
“Yeah, I’m happy to be in the second round here,” Simona added.
“I Didn’t Know Maybe How To Handle It”, Halep on 2021 Challenges
At the Italian Open 2021, Simona Halep got injured in her calf. As a result, she missed the French Open and Wimbledon this year. Most notably, Trauma also concluded Romanian’s streak of 373 straight weeks in the Top 10.
When asked about the challenges and frustrations of 2021, Halep explained, “It’s been the biggest challenge on the health part. The biggest injury that I ever had, the calf. I didn’t know maybe how to handle it. In the beginning, I got a little bit down about it.”
“Then I rushed being ready for Wimbledon because I wanted so badly to play Wimbledon. But I think I forced those two weeks, and then I had to stay another four.”
“It was something new, and now I can say I have learned something from that. And when I feel a little pain, I stop, and I try to recover as much as possible.”
Speaking about lessons learned from setback, Romanian confessed, “Yeah, that I have an age now, 30 almost (smiling) and, yeah, everybody who told me that it’s normal at 29, 30, it’s normal to have this injury. So it’s normal.”
